Why your Richmond Hill business does not appear in the Google map pack

The map pack is the block of three businesses Google shows with a map for local searches. It takes the majority of clicks on any “near me” query, and if you are not in it, you are competing for the leftovers. Here is why a Richmond Hill business typically is not there, in the order worth checking.

Proximity, the factor nobody controls

Start here, because it explains most cases and no amount of optimisation fixes it. Google weights the distance between the searcher and your registered address heavily. Two clinics of identical quality will rank differently for the same search depending on where the person is standing.

This is why checking your own rankings from your own office is misleading. You are the closest business to yourself. Search from a different postal code and the result usually changes completely.

The practical consequence: if your competitors sit closer to the commercial centre of Richmond Hill than you do, ranking for the broad city-wide term is genuinely hard. Ranking for your immediate neighbourhood is not.

An incomplete Google Business Profile

Most profiles we audit are perhaps 60 percent filled. The gaps that matter:

  • Primary category. One field, enormous weight. “Marketing agency” and “Internet marketing service” rank for measurably different searches.
  • Services. Each service you list is a relevance signal. Most profiles list none.
  • Business description. Frequently left as the default or stuffed with keywords, which helps nothing.
  • Photos. Profiles with recent, regularly added photos outperform dormant ones.
  • Hours, including holiday hours. Google demotes profiles it suspects are stale.

Inconsistent name, address and phone details

If your address appears as “Unit 416” in one directory, “Suite 416” in another, and without the unit number in a third, Google has three partially conflicting records. Conflicting citations actively suppress local rankings rather than simply failing to help.

This is unglamorous work and it is often where the fastest improvement sits. Pick one exact string, down to the punctuation, and make every listing match it.

Not enough recent reviews

There is no review count that unlocks the map pack. What matters more than the total is recency and consistency. A business gaining two or three reviews a month generally outperforms one with a larger total that stopped eighteen months ago.

Responding matters too, and it is the part most businesses skip. Google treats replies as an activity signal, and prospective customers read how you handle criticism far more closely than they read the praise.

No genuine local content on the site

Your website supports the profile. If it never mentions Richmond Hill in a meaningful way, never names the neighbourhoods you serve, and has no page for the service someone searched for, the profile is doing the work alone.

The failure mode to avoid is the doorway page: twenty near-identical pages with the city name swapped. Google has treated that as spam for years. One substantial page per area you genuinely serve beats twenty thin ones.

Unverified, suspended or duplicated listings

Worth ruling out early because it is binary. An unverified profile will not rank. A suspended one will not appear at all. And duplicate listings, common after a move or a rebrand, split your signals across two records so neither ranks properly.

How to diagnose yours in ten minutes

  1. Search your main service plus “Richmond Hill” from a browser where you are not signed in.
  2. Note the three businesses that appear and how far each is from the centre of town.
  3. Open each of their profiles and compare category, services, photo recency and review velocity against yours.
  4. Search your business name in quotes and count how many separate listings exist.

That comparison usually makes the gap obvious. In most audits we run, it is category and review recency rather than anything technical.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my business not showing in the Google map pack?

The usual causes are an unverified or incomplete Google Business Profile, a primary category that does not match the search, too few recent reviews, inconsistent name, address and phone details across the web, or simply being further from the searcher than the three businesses shown.

How much does proximity actually matter?

A great deal, and it is the factor you cannot optimise. Google shows the map pack relative to where the searcher is standing. A business in Richmond Hill and one in Mississauga are usually not competing for the same map results even when they offer the same service.

How many Google reviews do I need to appear in the map pack?

There is no threshold number. Review count and recency both contribute, and steady reviews over time tend to matter more than a batch collected at once. Competing against businesses with far more reviews is harder, but not decisive on its own.

Can a service area business appear in the map pack?

Yes. A business that travels to customers can hide its address and set a service area instead. It will generally rank around its registered location, so the service area setting widens who can find you but does not remove the proximity effect.

How long after fixing my profile before I appear?

Category and information changes can be reflected within days. Movement driven by reviews, citations and on-page work typically takes 60 to 120 days. Anyone promising map pack placement in a fortnight is describing paid ads.
